I truly could not think of a better way to begin my career in healthcare than having this hands-on experience, and I will be forever grateful for it. I learned how to present myself in a confident manner that gave patients a sense of my competency within my role. I learned how to interact with patients and their families in a way that made them feel as comfortable as possible. I learned how to function as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team and what it meant to communicate effectively in order to reach optimal outcomes for our patients. I gained many valuable skills in this position. I also placed heart monitors, performed EKGs, and collected specimens when they were ordered by the providers. Some of the day-to-day responsibilities of the job included taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, ambulating, personal hygiene tasks, and feeding. It was an absolute honor to be able to assist patients as they healed. I had an amazing experience with this position. I was fortunate enough to receive offers to all three of the units that I interviewed for, so I was able to pick the one that I felt was the best fit for me. I find this guide to be pretty helpful in covering some of the bigger questions that may come up during an interview for a position of this nature. They asked me various questions about my experiences, skills, intentions with the job, and plans for the future. Three nurse managers ended up attending my interview. She then scheduled me for an interview with nurse managers from different units in the hospital. We set up a phone call where she asked me questions about my interests and availability. Shortly after submitting my application, I was contacted by a talent acquisition specialist at Lourdes. Every facility (and sometimes each specific unit) has its own requirements, so be sure to inquire at some point during the application and interview process.įor your application, it is a good idea to have a resume and cover letter prepared. I found this to be very manageable with school. When I worked at Lourdes, the requirement was 24 hours of weekend shifts (3 8-hour shifts or 2 12-hour shifts) in a 6-week schedule period. There are minimum scheduling requirements to hit, but they usually are not too demanding. Contrary to the typical full-time and part-time schedules, per diem essentially means that you work based on your availability and the facility’s needs. I was specifically looking for a position with a “per diem” schedule type. I knew people who had pursued employment at Ascension Lourdes Hospital (a facility local to the Binghamton area), so I went onto their careers website and began my search. A few years back, I decided that I wanted to gain some hands-on patient care experience before the clinical portion of nursing school began.
